Dunaföldvár, 12 May 2025, 2:30 p.m. – Around 5 a.m. of this morning, organic biogas digestate left over from biogas production spilled out at Pannonia Bio's Dunaföldvár site. Upon noticing the problem, the company immediately blocked the spread of the material, preventing leak into the Danube.
Apart from its unpleasant odour, biogas digestate is not harmful to human health or the environment: it is an organic fertilizer made exclusively from corn fiber, which is used in agriculture. The contents of a fermentation tank leaked within the plant area, but thanks to the swift intervention, the environmental impact of the incident was reduced to a minimum.
Pannonia Bio apologises to those affected for any inconvenience caused.
Damage control is currently underway at the plant. The gas treatment components of the biogas plant are functioning properly and there has been no gas leak. No one was injured in the incident.
Pannonia Bio immediately notified the local government and authorities upon becoming aware of the incident and is currently working with them to repair the technical fault and clean up the plant site. Some of the originally planned work will be rescheduled for the cleaning period (which may take several days). During the cleaning of the site, the odour may remain strong, for which Pannonia Bio apologises to those affected and asks for their understanding.
